A Xerox DocuShare Case Study
Imperial College Healthcare faced a mounting paper-handling problem in its cardiology department: non-invasive tests (ECGs, stress tests, ambulatory monitoring) produced large volumes of graphical hard-copy records that consumed scarce storage space, slowed retrieval, and risked misfiling. Desktop-based digitisation options proved slow, fragile and produced very large files, so Imperial College Healthcare turned to Xerox DocuShare for a more robust, clinical-grade electronic records approach.
Xerox DocuShare delivered a combined solution using Xerox WorkCentre Pro multi-function scanners and the DocuShare web-based document management application to scan records into compact PDF files with OCR, secure web retrieval and mirrored servers. The result: paper records have been superseded, clinicians can access and report on records hospital-wide, thermal paper use has been halved (offsetting equipment costs), staff are operational in about an hour, and Lee Lewis estimates up to 10 years of patient records can be stored on standard servers — all at a fraction of the cost of traditional medical imaging storage.
