A Xerox Corporation Case Study
Luton & Dunstable University Hospital, an NHS acute hospital in England, needed to improve patient care while reducing the cost and inefficiency of managing huge volumes of paper medical records. The hospital faced challenges with manual filing, storage, record retrieval delays, and limited access to notes across departments, all while moving toward the NHS goal of paperless electronic patient record systems.
Xerox Corporation implemented a staged electronic medical records solution, combining industrial scanning, document management outsourcing, barcode-based tracking, and a unified records management system with “intelligent paper” recognition. The result was a projected £2.2 million in net benefits over 10 years, a 15.7% reduction in operating costs, record availability of 99.7%, missing notes reduced to less than 0.3%, and about 750 square metres of space freed for clinical use.
