Maximizing Microgrid Controller Efficiency, with Cummins and Xendee

Cummins, a global power technology leader, sought to enhance the efficiency of its microgrid solutions by testing advanced optimization-based controls. The challenge was to validate how a sophisticated planning algorithm from Xendee’s DESIGN software would perform when integrated with Cummins' physical hardware, specifically its Microgrid Controller (MGC), to optimize energy costs in a real-world setting.

Xendee implemented its OPERATE platform, a Model Predictive Control (MPC) system, which was integrated with the Cummins MGC. This solution provided optimized set points for generators, batteries, and solar arrays every 15 minutes. The testing at Cummins' lab demonstrated successful integration and communication between the systems, confirming the potential for significant cost savings, including a strong reduction in demand charges. Xendee's platform proved its ability to deliver consistent, bankable results from the design phase through to live operation.
