Case Study: Quby achieves secure, open API management for smart home devices with WSO2 API Manager

A WSO2 Case Study

Smarter Home Devices With WSO2 API Manager

Quby, a Dutch startup that creates the Toon smart thermostat for energy provider Eneco, faced challenges with its API architecture. They lacked visibility into how their API was being used by third parties, had a proprietary login requiring encrypted credentials to be stored on devices, and their API was undocumented. They sought an off-the-shelf solution that supported OAuth2, was open source with affordable support, and was extensible for their small team to innovate with.

WSO2 implemented its open source API Manager to sit between Quby's connections, mobile backend, and other systems. This solution replaced the proprietary login with a standards-based approach, addressed security concerns, and provided a documented, supported API. The results were demonstrated at a hackathon where 14 working third-party apps were created over a single weekend, showcasing the platform's new openness and potential for innovation.
