Better Transport for a better London How We Won TfL’s Data in Motion Hackathon

Transport for London (TfL) faces the constant challenge of managing traffic, train capacity, maintenance, and commuter air quality across a vast public transport network. At a public hackathon hosted by TfL, AWS, and Geovation, WSO2 used TfL’s open data to explore solutions for predicting station crowding, improving route planning, and suggesting safer walking and cycling options.

Using WSO2 Complex Event Processor and WSO2 Data Analytics Server with Apache Spark and Lucene, WSO2 built a demo app that analyzed passenger, traffic sensor, incident, roadwork, and air quality data in real time. The results included crowd-flow insights, route optimization, and a traffic prediction model that was 88% accurate in tests, and WSO2’s solution was selected as the hackathon winner.
