EMR Extinguishes Fire Fighters’ Preventative Healthcare Concerns

The San Antonio Fire Department Office of Health and Wellness launched a wellness program in 2011 to provide annual physicals for 1,653 uniformed employees and needed a secure, paperless EMR that was affordable and easy for a small medical team to use. Key challenges included protecting confidential records, managing complex on-duty scheduling and cancellations, and capturing comprehensive exam data with limited staff and budget.

After evaluating about 30 systems, the department implemented Waiting Room Solutions (WRS) for its clinician-focused workflow, low upfront cost and ease of use. WRS provided secure cloud storage, one-computer-per-exam-room access to labs/X‑rays, customizable templates, and robust scheduling/cancellation tracking; the result was faster, better-documented exams, improved follow-up compliance, remote access for staff, and greater operational confidence as the program expands into infection control.
