Preview of the Kolkata Metro Case Study

How Kolkata Metro booked 11.5M+ tickets & saved $3.2 Million, minimising Covid-19 spread with Chatbot

Kolkata Metro, a major metro transportation company in India, faced a significant challenge with overcrowded stations during the COVID-19 pandemic. The need for physical ticket purchases created long queues, presenting a high risk of virus transmission for its 700,000+ daily passengers. To make commutes safer and prevent the spread of the virus, Kolkata Metro partnered with vendor WotNot through its partner Ideation Technologies to find a contact-less solution.

WotNot implemented an automated chatbot solution that allowed travelers to generate their tickets via their smartphones, eliminating the need to wait in line. The solution handled immense peak traffic of 3,000 requests per minute by leveraging auto-scaling server configurations on Google Cloud. This resulted in the generation of over 11.25 million tickets, $3.2 million in cost savings, and was credited with helping to minimize the spread of COVID-19, leading to a 90% improvement in customer satisfaction ratings.
