Preview of the Colorado School of Mines Case Study

Colorado School of Mines hosts 450+ VR visitors and publishes 5 studies with WorldViz

The Colorado School of Mines, a top-ranked university for mining engineering, sought to advance its research into mine safety and hazard assessment through immersive technology. To explore the benefits of VR for this perceptual research, the school contracted with WorldViz to provide a sophisticated multi-user virtual reality solution.

WorldViz implemented a co-located VR system featuring its VizMove Collaboration VR, PPT Motion Tracking, Vizard VR Toolkit, and Vizible VR software. This solution allowed researchers to create highly accurate digital recreations of mining environments for safe, reproducible user studies. The results were significant; the lab received over 450 visitors and its members produced five peer-reviewed publications. The work is directly helping to improve worldwide mining safety practices and working conditions.
