How Reliant Energy Reduced Costs and Increased Quality with Automated Testing of SAP

Reliant Energy, part of NRG and serving more than 1.5 million retail customers in Texas, faced a complex SAP/CRM landscape and mounting testing costs: testing consumed over 53,000 hours per year, produced thousands of project defects, and had only about 1.6% test automation—making testing the highest project cost and a major bottleneck to faster, higher-quality releases.

Reliant piloted Worksoft Certify to automate end-to-end SAP testing (ECC, SRM, Portal), building 31 reusable components and 639 process steps in a 2‑day POC. Automated tests ran orders of magnitude faster (scenarios that took 4 hours manually ran in 17 minutes), enabled large reductions in testing effort (for example, regression testing from 2,371 to 474 hours and UAT from 23,712 to 14,227 hours), increased reuse and test coverage, lowered costs and defect impact, and established a scalable automation program and culture.
