Illumina, a global leader in DNA sequencing, needed a better way to connect 7,500 employees across 20 locations in eight countries and to enable two-way conversations under a new CEO; previous tools lacked the features and executive buy-in required. They selected Workplace from Meta to test whether a modern, social intranet-style platform could turbocharge leadership communication and companywide engagement.

Workplace from Meta was piloted and fully launched in July 2017 with an intentional three-group structure, embedded into Illumina’s intranet and synced to distribution lists so location-specific posts reach the right people and drive interaction (comments, shares, live video). The initiative connected the global workforce, boosted leadership visibility and dialogue, and delivered measurable impact — reaching 7,500 employees across 20 locations and eight countries and helping produce a staff survey result showing 86% of employees feel senior management is clearly communicating company direction.
