Eimskip, Iceland’s oldest shipping company with operations in more than 20 countries and over 60 offices, needed a way to connect a dispersed workforce on vessels, in offices, docks and on the road. Their existing internal web was a one-way channel and employees were already using closed social groups, so they adopted Workplace from Meta to enable bottom-up, two-way communication across borders and time zones.

Workplace from Meta was rapidly rolled out by Olafur Hand’s team—an approach of “jumping right in” that produced immediate global uptake on launch, with staff across dozens of countries joining the same day. By using Workplace Groups for collaboration and critical “First Responders” alerts, Eimskip achieved faster information flow, stronger top-to-bottom engagement (from dockworkers to executives) and clear operational benefits such as instant incident notifications and higher participation across the organization.
