IBM Research faced the challenge of enabling autonomous AI agents from different frameworks to communicate and cooperate effectively, as each framework used its own bespoke JSON format, authentication method, and streaming implementation, requiring custom glue code for integration.

WorkOS, through its BeeAI project and the Agent Communication Protocol (ACP), provided a standardized solution. ACP offers a common JSON-RPC over HTTP/WebSockets wire format and a control plane for dynamic discovery, authentication, and secure, observable cooperation between agents. This allowed IBM Research's agents to behave like a tight micro-service cluster, keeping proprietary IP secure within a local-first, airgapped environment while enabling seamless integration with agents from other vendors and open-source projects.
