Cursor, a customer of WorkOS, needed to provide its users with a secure and simple method to authenticate machine clients for automating workflows and integrating with external systems. The challenge was to choose the right machine authentication model that would offer both security and a seamless developer experience for their customers.

WorkOS implemented its API Keys solution, which provides a built-in widget for Cursor's customers to easily generate and manage long-lived, organization-scoped tokens. This eliminated the need for Cursor to build its own UI for credential management and provided a frictionless way for its users to create keys with configurable permissions. The solution securely authenticates machine clients while aligning with customer expectations for ease of use.
