AuthKit, a customer of WorkOS, faced the challenge of onboarding AI agents to its API. Traditional OAuth flows require a human with a browser to complete authentication, an assumption that fails when an AI agent with no browser or user interface needs to make API calls. This created a significant barrier for AI agents attempting to interact with AuthKit's service.

WorkOS implemented its AuthKit Agent Registration feature to solve this. The solution provides a new, programmatic flow for agents, including a discovery mechanism, anonymous registration, and a lightweight claim ceremony where a user binds their identity to the agent. This allowed AuthKit to offer untrusted access for exploration and trusted, authenticated access after a simple human confirmation, eliminating the need for browser redirects and enabling seamless AI agent integration.
