A Workiva Case Study
NII Holdings, a Latin American mobile communications company based in Reston, Va., faced a cumbersome three-step SEC reporting process managed by Shannon Davis: reports were drafted in Word, sent to an outside printer for EDGARizing, and then to a separate vendor for XBRL tagging. The workflow caused frequent file-locking and slow application performance, costly and lengthening printer turnarounds (rising from 24 to 48 hours at about $100 per page for changes), and XBRL delays that made deliverables dependent on third parties.
NII adopted Wdesk to consolidate reporting, EDGAR, and XBRL into one platform; the transition during the 2011 10‑K was smooth, Workiva completed initial XBRL tagging support, and NII now handles most tagging in-house. The change eliminated change-management bottlenecks, enabled last-minute edits in minutes, and reduced SEC reporting costs by roughly two-thirds.
