A Workday Case Study
The Texas A&M University System, a public research system of 20 independent organizations with 48,000 employees and 152,000 students, faced an urgent modernization challenge: aging, highly customized on‑premise HR and payroll systems (including a 35,000‑line COBOL payroll engine), disappearing staff skills, and state pressure to move to cloud solutions. These legacy systems created operational risk, costly maintenance, and slow, fragmented processes across multiple CFO/CHRO offices.
The system implemented Workday HCM, Payroll, Time Tracking, and Recruiting in a single tenant for all 20 members—delivered on time and under budget—standardizing processes and improving visibility. Results included a 30% time savings in payroll calculations, payroll execution dropping from 10–12 hours to under 3 hours, mobile access and better approvals, zero upgrade costs for IT, stronger reporting, and more IT focus on strategic work like cybersecurity.
