South China Morning Post (SCMP), a Hong Kong–headquartered global news organisation of about 1,000 employees across China, Singapore and the U.S., was hampered by a 14‑year‑old legacy HR system. Employees relied on hard‑copy forms and HR staff for basic updates and leave requests, overseas processes were especially cumbersome, and compatibility and maintenance issues made workflows slow and time‑consuming.

SCMP implemented Workday (Human Capital Management, Performance, Absence) as a single cloud platform in a five‑month “big bang” rollout, consolidating staff data and providing a consistent, mobile‑friendly interface. The move eliminated paper forms, cut administrative workload and costs, enabled self‑service updates and leave in minutes, gave managers direct access to reports and absence management, and freed HR to focus on strategic initiatives.
