California College of the Arts (CCA), an Oakland-based art and design school with 1,500+ employees and 1,800+ students, was hampered by disparate HR and payroll systems, error-prone spreadsheets, and paper timesheets that hid personnel data, made reporting difficult, and delivered a poor user experience for adjuncts and managers.

CCA implemented Workday (Human Capital Management, Payroll, Time Tracking and Recruiting) to unify HR and payroll, streamline processes, and improve visibility. The move delivered faster task completion (tasks that once took an hour now take about 15 minutes), better reporting and manager self‑service, a modern user interface, smoother upgrades, and freed HR to act as a strategic partner while enabling future mobile timesheet and recruiting improvements.
