Schnuck Markets streamlines hiring processes during the pandemic

Schnuck Markets is a family‑owned Midwest supermarket chain with 112 stores and 14,500 teammates across four states. As an essential business during the pandemic, the grocer faced about 10% absenteeism—four times normal—and needed to hire and onboard 1,500 people in two months while complying with 31 complex union contracts and thousands of payroll/time rules, prompting a demanding RFP for a new HCM solution.

Schnuck deployed Workday HCM and related applications, replacing a mainframe HCM and two payroll systems to unify employee data and streamline recruitment, onboarding, payroll, and time tracking. The platform allowed rapid process changes (as fast as 30 minutes), enabled immediate clock‑in/clock‑out and pay for new hires, reduced HR/payroll workload, and improved teammate engagement and retention.
