A Workday Adaptive Planning Case Study
Belk, a 130-year-old department store based in Charlotte, is expanding beyond its Southern roots and ramping up e-commerce while handling large seasonal hiring spikes (as many as 10,000 temporary hires). Its legacy, spreadsheet-driven HR systems lacked flexibility, visibility, and consistent talent processes, making recruiting, onboarding, and skills development inefficient as store roles shifted to support fulfillment and omnichannel retailing.
Belk deployed Workday HCM (including Recruiting, Learning, Talent Management, Time/Attendance, and Compensation) to centralize talent processes, provide mobile access for store managers, standardize requisition templates, and deliver real-time hiring and skills reporting. The change produced faster, more consistent seasonal hiring and onboarding, improved employee development and retention, clearer operational visibility for planning, and non-disruptive support for the company’s move to a modern, multichannel retail model while preserving its people-focused culture.
