CarMax - Customer Case Study

CarMax faced a major scaling and digital-transformation challenge: as the company shifted from a store-led used-car business to a tech-driven, omni-channel experience, its Product and IT organizations ballooned (from ~50 to ~800 people), creating siloed teams, overloaded dependencies, inconsistent planning discipline, and pressure to "double the pace of innovation." Leadership needed a way to translate high-level strategy into team-level priorities, improve cross-functional collaboration, and make progress against OKRs predictable and visible.

CarMax partnered with WorkBoard and built a Product Operations practice to standardize OKR coaching, planning cadence, and progress management—defining philosophies, instilling discipline, and using WorkBoard tools (scorecards, milestones, running business reviews) as a single source of truth. The program certified 117 OKR coaches, increased cross-functional teaming and alignment across the global IT organization, and delivered much greater visibility into outcomes (today 47% of teams meet their objectives, with targets of 70–90%), positioning the company for continued improvement in strategy execution.
