3M’s Automotive & Aerospace division, led by Steve Shafer, faced an industry undergoing rapid transformation—electric vehicles, new competitors and compressed timelines—while managing supply-chain disruption and the tension between short‑term quarterly results and long‑cycle strategic investments. Shafer emphasizes that mindset and everyday communications shape momentum, and that established companies must rethink risk and learning to keep pace.
To address this, 3M applied OKR thinking supported by WorkBoard across three divisions in two business groups (customer since Summer 2020), backed by divisional sponsors, strategy leaders and more than 75 OKR coaches. Focusing on the “vital few” strategic priorities linked to execution created clarity, empowered teams, accelerated momentum and delivered deep alignment between strategy and results.
