Turnover reduction saves hospital millions

Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center faced nursing-related turnover well above the U.S. average (10.5%), which strained staff and threatened patient care. To understand why employees were leaving, the hospital partnered with Work Institute and adopted an outsourced exit interview program and human capital analytics to gather both quantitative and qualitative workforce intelligence.

Work Institute implemented targeted exit interviews in five high-turnover units, providing coded and verbatim reports and root-cause analyses that informed action plans (for example, a nursing career ladder and tuition assistance partnerships). The Work Institute-driven program cut turnover by as much as 34% (about $257,000 saved), reduced Patient Services turnover 11% from 2007 to 2013, and shifted reasons for leaving from supervisor-driven to non-hospital-driven, improving retention and performance.
