Case Study: Nova Innovation advances tidal energy reliability and cuts costs with Wood

A Wood Case Study

Preview of the Nova Innovation Case Study

The €20 million flagship Enabling Future Arrays in Tidal (EnFAIT) project, led by Nova Innovation in collaboration with eight other organisations

The customer, Nova Innovation, in collaboration with other organizations, faced the challenge of proving the commercial viability and reliability of tidal energy arrays. They partnered with vendor Wood, whose clean energy team served as the independent technical and commercial expert on the flagship EnFAIT project to verify the development of the world’s first offshore tidal array.

Wood was commissioned to verify each stage of the engineering design, commissioning, and operational performance of the turbine array located off the Shetland Islands. The results of this ongoing work have been significant, earning the project approval from the European Commission to proceed to its next phase. The project aims to achieve a measurable impact by demonstrating that high array reliability can be achieved and the cost of tidal energy can be reduced by at least 40%, advancing the global energy transition.
