Case Study: SSEN Transmission restores Scotland’s 87km power line with Wood

A Wood Case Study

Preview of the SSEN Transmission Case Study

Keeping the power flowing in remote Scotland

The customer, SSEN Transmission, required the refurbishment of an 87km overhead transmission line in a remote and ecologically sensitive area of Scotland. This challenging project involved updating critical infrastructure originally built in the 1950s while minimizing disruption to protected wildlife habitats and navigating difficult terrain and harsh weather. Vendor Wood was tasked with completing this restringing work safely and sustainably.

Wood successfully delivered the solution by employing innovative methods, including using helicopters to transport materials and avoid constructing new access tracks, and drones to monitor protected bird species during their breeding season. This diligent approach resulted in the project being completed ahead of schedule with zero lost-time injuries and winning a Green Apple Environmental Award. The work by Wood ensures this vital line can now transport clean energy for years to come, supporting the transition to net zero.
