Case Study: SGN advances hydrogen home heating with Wood

A Wood Case Study

Preview of the SGN Case Study

Engineering solutions to heat homes with hydrogen

The gas distribution network operator SGN partnered with engineering firm Wood to explore the feasibility of supplying green hydrogen for domestic heating. The challenge was to decarbonize the UK's energy system and reduce emissions by identifying a viable way to transition homes away from fossil fuels, a key requirement for meeting national net-zero targets.

Wood provided feasibility and front-end engineering design (FEED) services for a proposed production and storage facility. Their multi-disciplinary team evaluated a site, secured planning consent, and designed a distribution network to supply 300 homes. As a direct result of Wood's work, SGN was able to make an informed decision to take the H100 project forward, selecting a site in Fife for the world's first demonstration project that will use renewable power to produce green hydrogen for heating.
