Enabling conservation and biodiversity of our oceans

Veramaris, a joint venture between Evonik and Royal DSM, faced the challenge of meeting the global demand for omega-3 fatty acids (EPA and DHA) without further depleting wild fish stocks through overfishing. They tasked Wood with designing and building a new production facility to create a sustainable, algae-based alternative.

Wood delivered a detailed design and provided construction management for the $200 million facility, which included both brownfield modifications and new greenfield construction. The project was completed on time and on budget. The resulting Veramaris plant now produces enough algal oil to replace the equivalent of 1.2 million tons of wild-caught fish annually, directly supporting ocean conservation and biodiversity.
