what3words is Building a New Global Addressing Standard

what3words was founded after founder Chris Sheldrick experienced recurring problems with people getting lost at live events and festivals. Seeing that traditional street addresses often didn’t pinpoint exact locations, the team divided the world into 3 m x 3 m squares and assigned each square a unique combination of three dictionary words, creating a simple, human-readable global addressing system.

what3words is available as a free app and API and has been adopted by carmakers (Mercedes‑Benz, Ford), emergency services, humanitarian groups, and businesses like Domino’s and Lonely Planet. Physical signs and an online sign shop, plus a WooCommerce plugin for easy checkout integration, have increased visibility and usage—resulting in faster deliveries, more accurate navigation, quicker emergency response, and addresses for places that previously had none.
