Case Study: Yellow River Conservancy achieves rapid deployment, reduced engineering costs and improved river regulation with Wonderware

A Wonderware Case Study

The Yellow River Is Still a Major Source of Water to One Hundred Million People

The Yellow River Conservancy Commission, an agency of China’s Ministry of Water Resources that supplies water to about 100 million people across nine provinces, needed a large-scale distributed operating system to manage hundreds of kilometers of river infrastructure. The challenge was to build a central database with real-time data transfer and distributed decision support to regulate water quantity, prevent flow stoppages during droughts, and enable reliable flood forecasting across many sluice stations and management levels.

The Commission implemented a Wonderware-based SCADA/HMI solution — including System Platform, InTouch HMI, Historian, Information Server and Device Integration Servers — deploying the first phase (43 sluice stations over ~700 km) in three months. The solution reduced engineering time and cost through reusable objects and rapid deployment, enabled secure remote reporting and control, improved flood forecasting and sediment/water-quality management, and strengthened regulation of flows for the river’s 100 million users.
