Steel Industry Leader Revolutionizes Production with Wonderware

Nucor Steel’s Berkeley, South Carolina mill, which produces more than 2,500 tons of rolled sheet steel and structural beams daily, faced the harsh realities of a melting area: extreme temperatures, heavy handling, rapid wear and frequent equipment disruptions. The team needed to maximize throughput and uptime, improve process control, standardize applications for faster engineering, and respond quickly to changing conditions to protect productivity and profits.

By extending its existing AVEVA InTouch deployment with AVEVA System Platform and Historian, Nucor centralized furnace data, standardized application objects and enabled a rugged thin‑client approach. The result was tighter integration and immediate, actionable feedback that reduced downtime, increased productivity, simplified reporting, and let engineers add or remove equipment in minutes; the system also helped identify and correct melt-process faults (like slab holes) without shutting furnaces down.
