A Wonderware Case Study
Barcelona–El Prat International Airport, operated by AENA, faced a major modernization challenge as it prepared to triple in size and add a new terminal, power plants, baggage systems and many ancillary services. The existing control environment relied on 15–20 proprietary solutions, forcing operators to learn dozens of tools, increasing maintenance costs, slowing incident response and threatening reliability, scalability and budget targets—requirements that had to be met in a way that could be replicated across AENA’s network of airports.
AENA standardized on AVEVA System Platform and introduced common engineering rules and object templates that all vendors had to follow, creating a single, open control architecture. The result: a unified SCADA environment now managing about 700,000 signals across 80 servers (with nearly 1 million signals expected), faster incident resolution via integrated alarms and CCTV, lower training and maintenance costs, improved operational reliability (including one of Europe’s lowest lost‑luggage rates), and a scalable model ready to be deployed across other airports.
