Carson City Public Works Leverages “Smart City” Technology

Carson City Public Works, serving a growing historically industrial region, needed to improve reliability and transparency across water, wastewater, power and transportation systems while keeping costs down. The department faced challenges including unplanned downtime, dispersed assets and remote locations, the need for secure mobile access to real-time and historical data, and integration with existing municipal systems to support staff mobility across jurisdictions.

Using AVEVA’s SmartGlance and virtualization technologies deployed on iPads and smartphones (with support from partner PacWest), Carson City centralized visualization and enabled field crews and managers to view KPIs and Historian data on the move. The solution improved situational awareness and operational readiness, sped incident response and reduced MTTR, lowered administrative burden, and increased reliability and transparency of municipal services—helping staff shift to more flexible staffing models while maintaining essential services like power generation, water delivery and traffic systems.
