A Wonderlic Case Study
Wilkes Community College, serving Wilkes, Ashe and Alleghany counties in northwest North Carolina, provides literacy, ABE, GED, ESL and Adult High School programs to more than 1,200 adults each year. Facing higher-than-average adult literacy challenges in the state, the college needed an efficient way to assess students’ reading, writing and math skills and to break the cycle of low literacy that contributes to unemployment and poverty.
After adopting Wonderlic’s GAIN assessment, Wilkes saw immediate benefits: shorter, less stressful tests for students, graphical diagnostics that motivate learners, and detailed reports that let instructors pinpoint exact skill gaps. The college saved teacher time by eliminating manual grading, streamlined NRS reporting, and began delivering more targeted instruction—improvements expected to yield faster EFL gains and better student outcomes.
