Astronaut Creates Virtual Copilot with Raspberry Pi and Wolfram Neural Nets

FOALE AEROSPACE, Inc., led by a former NASA astronaut, faced the challenge of helping pilots anticipate and prevent dangerous aircraft stalls and spins in time to avoid fatal accidents. To solve this, they turned to Wolfram and utilized the Wolfram Language, including its neural networks and machine learning capabilities, to create a virtual copilot system.

The solution from Wolfram involved training a neural network on flight data using functions like Classify, which quickly learned to identify dangerous "out-of-family" flight behavior. This resulted in the Solar Pilot Guard (SPG) prototype, which was developed in less than a month. The system won a bronze medal in an innovation competition, and subsequent improvements using Wolfram's FindClusters function drastically reduced data processing time and false positives, providing pilots with life-saving early warnings.
