The Cheesecake Factory’s learning and development team, represented by Stu Ackerman in Wisetail’s “Ask a Pro” series, faced the challenge of keeping employees engaged across a wide range of topics—from appetizing product knowledge to dry but critical subjects like safe heavy-lifting. The core problem was creating training that sparks emotional buy-in and makes essential but unexciting material personally relevant and memorable.
They solved this by injecting humor and visual storytelling (cartoons and technical illustrations) and adopting short, high-speed process videos to compress learning and demonstrate complex tasks clearly. The result was stronger attention and retention, more requests for illustrated materials, and learners who felt more confident and engaged in tackling both everyday and complex job tasks.
