O&G Supermajor Upgrades Subsurface Applications to Capture Data at Source

Leading Oil & Gas Supermajor Company faced slow, inconsistent subsurface application performance across regions, driven by non-standardized processes, legacy technology, and more than 70 disconnected applications. The resulting data-transfer burden, system outages, and lack of collaboration increased turnaround time, cost of ownership, and reduced stakeholder satisfaction. Wipro was engaged to modernize the environment using a Platform-as-a-Service model and upgrade the Petrel subsurface platform.

Wipro implemented a standardized, integrated solution that included Petrel upgrades, infrastructure refresh, data migration from OpenWorks, workflow tools, and a coordinated release roadmap across regional applications. The result was a geoscience platform deployed to 17 sites and about 1,300–1,400 users, with up to 35% better application performance, 30% higher end-user productivity, and 30% cost reduction over 18 months. Wipro also helped cut operating expenses by 40%, migrate 445 TB of data, decommission 569 servers, and deliver the platform about $100 million under budget.
