Preview of the Carney Case Study

Professional Services Company Streamlines Accounting Systems and Increases Customer Loyalty

Carney, a professional services company based in Alexandria, Virginia, developed Web-based learning and knowledge management solutions but was working with three separate systems for project management, cost accounting, and timesheet reporting. The disconnected setup made it hard to share data, increased duplicate work, and limited visibility across projects. Carney partnered with Brittenford Systems to evaluate a more integrated approach using Microsoft tools.

Brittenford Systems implemented Microsoft Business Solutions–Solomon for accounting and Microsoft Project Server 2002 for project management, with SQL Server as the shared database and Microsoft Office Professional Edition 2003 supporting internal work. The new system reduced labor by $400 to $700 per week, cut the receivables cycle by 8 to 10 days, and saved approximately $7,000 annually. Carney also expected more than $40,000 in cost savings for 2004, ROI within 16 months, and a 15 percent reduction in programming time per project.
