Tracking bark beetle infestations with multispectral data

Sitmp, a public technology services company based in Pilsen, Czech Republic, needed a better way to monitor bark beetle infestations spreading through nearby forests. After trying multirotor drones with too little coverage and fixed-wing aircraft with landing constraints, they turned to Wingtra and its WingtraOne drone with a MicaSense RedEdge-MX multispectral camera.

Wingtra provided WingtraOne for repeated multispectral surveys of 40–50 hectare forest patches every two weeks. The resulting maps revealed early tree stress that was not visible to the naked eye, helping foresters pinpoint infected trees and remove them before beetles spread to neighboring areas, improving targeted intervention and outbreak control.
