Kenya Red Cross gathers multispectral drone data to help manage the worst locust invasion in 70 years

KRCS, the Kenya Red Cross Society, needed to quickly assess damage from East Africa’s worst locust invasion in 70 years while facing tight deadlines, pandemic travel restrictions, and vast areas to cover. Wingtra provided the WingtraOne drone with a MicaSense RedEdge-MX multispectral payload to help gather reliable aerial data across affected counties.

Using WingtraOne, KRCS collected high-resolution RGB, NDVI, and vegetation index maps over seven counties in one week, with each flight covering 60–70 hectares in 30–40 minutes. Wingtra’s data helped KRCS and the FAO evaluate locust impact, check whether spraying efforts were effective, and produce evidence to support response decisions and fundraising.
