How Drone Surveys Can Save Time and Improve Data Accuracy in Mining

Kies AG, a gravel extraction and landfill company in Glattfelden, Switzerland, needed a more efficient and accurate way to monitor two mines and calculate excavation volumes. Until then, the company relied on helicopter photogrammetry and machine guidance, which provided usable data but took days to collect and much longer to process, with limited digital reuse.

Wingtra worked with Kies AG using the WingtraOne mapping drone and Pix4Dmapper to run test flights and post-process the survey data. The drone survey covered a 20 ha mine in just one day and delivered absolute accuracy down to 1 cm, compared with about 5 cm from helicopter surveys. Wingtra’s solution gave Kies AG faster results, more precise volume measurements, and better support for production forecasting, operational planning, and legal compliance.
