Mitsubishi Electric launches edge computing with Wind River in 2018

Mitsubishi Electric Corporation, a leading global supplier of electronic hardware for factory automation, was preparing to launch its first line of products designed for edge computing. Their challenge was to combine real-time equipment control with high-speed data collection, processing, and feedback in a single machine. To meet this objective, they turned to vendor Wind River and its VxWorks real-time operating system.

Wind River supplied the VxWorks operating system and virtualization technology, which enabled the consolidation of workloads on a single platform. This solution allowed Mitsubishi Electric's MI5000 to provide both real-time control and edge computing. As a result, Mitsubishi Electric successfully launched its MELIPC Series of industrial computers in 2018, advancing edge computing in manufacturing and strengthening its position as a leader in Industrial IoT.
