Leonardo ports VxWorks to multi-core processors with Wind River in 4 architecture deployments

Leonardo, a global security company and one of the UK's largest aerospace and defense firms, faced the challenge of updating its radio frequency systems with modern multi-core processors while mitigating hardware obsolescence and meeting stringent new safety regulations. To deploy software-defined capabilities and maintain a technological advantage, they partnered with vendor Wind River and utilized the VxWorks real-time operating system.

Wind River implemented VxWorks Cert Edition to provide a common, abstracted runtime environment across Leonardo's chosen multi-core processors, simplifying application porting and supporting safety certification. Wind River Professional Services developed board support packages, device drivers, and DO-178C certification evidence. The result was deterministic real-time performance on the new hardware, enabling Leonardo to successfully commence system integration for its RF system while significantly reducing certification risk.
