Israel Aerospace Industries puts TaxiBot 5 years ahead with Wind River

Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI), along with partners Airbus and TLD group, faced the challenge of eliminating massive fuel waste and pollution caused by commercial airplanes idling on runways with their jet engines running. Their objective was to develop a semi-autonomous towing vehicle, TaxiBot, that could safely tow aircraft and give pilots full control, a feat that had thwarted previous efforts. To build the intelligent software system for this vehicle, IAI chose the VxWorks operating system from vendor Wind River.

With the Wind River VxWorks embedded operating system and support from Wind River Professional Services, the TaxiBot team was able to accelerate its safety certification process. This support from Wind River dramatically shortened the product's development timeline from prototype to a fully approved vehicle, putting TaxiBot at least five years ahead of its competitors.
