Collins Aerospace achieves first DO-178C DAL A multi-core certification with Wind River

Collins Aerospace faced the challenge of needing a higher-performance, deterministic software virtualization platform for avionics to support autonomous aircraft and reduce costs associated with size, weight, and power. This platform had to achieve the highest levels of safety certification, but no multi-core design had ever been certified at that level of criticality on multiple cores. They collaborated with Wind River to address this need.

Wind River implemented its VxWorks 653 Multi-core Edition, which enables multiple guest operating systems to run on a single hardware platform. Through collaboration on design and certification plans, they greatly reduced technical and program certification risks while increasing available processing resources. Together, Collins Aerospace and Wind River achieved the world’s first FAA multi-core certification for avionics.
