A Wind River Case Study
AgustaWestland, a manufacturer in the aerospace and defense sector, faced the challenge of developing a new safety-critical touch screen avionics display for a military helicopter upgrade. Their objective was to move beyond traditional systems and implement additional functionality to meet new operational requirements. They partnered with Wind River and utilized the VxWorks 653 real-time operating system to achieve this.
Wind River provided a solution using VxWorks 653, which implements ARINC 653 application partitioning. This open, standards-based approach allowed AgustaWestland to configure the display to ARINC 661 graphics standards and integrate applications modularly. The result was a successful safety-critical touch screen that provided improved human-machine interface navigation and met all operational requirements. The Wind River solution also established an open foundation for easier future upgrades and certification.
