University of Perugia and WhoisXML API Advancing Investigation Techniques to Teach Law Enforcement

The University of Perugia worked with WhoisXML API to support research and teaching in digital forensics and law enforcement investigations. The challenge was limited visibility into critical WHOIS data because of privacy redaction and the difficulty of performing effective reverse IP and reverse WHOIS lookups, which made it harder to attribute cybercrime and trace malicious infrastructures. The team used products such as WHOIS History, Reverse WHOIS, and Reverse IP through the Domain Research Suite and Maltego transforms.

WhoisXML API provided historical WHOIS records, reverse WHOIS lookups, and reliable IP-to-domain mapping that gave the university more complete context for investigations. This helped the professor build and test replicable investigation techniques for students and law enforcement trainees, improving digital attribution and strengthening cyber investigation workflows. WhoisXML API’s data was described as more accurate and complete than alternatives, and it enabled broader visibility into key domain and IP intelligence needed for training.
