Arizona State University and WhoisXML API Enhancing Online Scam Detection and Protection with Website Categorization API

Arizona State University, working with WhoisXML API, set out to improve detection of fraudulent online shopping websites. A PhD student in Computer Science needed a more targeted way to identify and classify shopping sites because broad tools like Google Safe Browsing and standard phishing detection were not accurate enough for this use case. The project used WhoisXML API’s Website Categorization API to support daily domain collection and filtering.

WhoisXML API’s Website Categorization API provided fast, reliable category labels and confidence scores, helping the team filter out non-shopping sites and build a cleaner data pipeline focused on online shopping. As a result, the system processed less irrelevant data, ran more efficiently, and improved the accuracy of the scam detection classifier by training it on more appropriate website examples.
