BBVA, a major banking institution, faced the challenge of manually analyzing lengthy and unstructured annual sustainability reports to evaluate the ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) indicators of its corporate clients for loan decisions. This process was highly time-consuming. To overcome this, BBVA partnered with vendor WhiteBox for a solution leveraging advanced technology.

WhiteBox implemented a solution using Large Language Models, specifically the LangChain framework and OpenAI's GPT-4, to automatically and precisely extract ESG indicators from documents. This was complemented by a Microsoft Power BI dashboard for dynamic data exploration. The solution allowed BBVA to prioritize financing for sustainable businesses without manual review, resulting in significant time and resource savings for the bank and optimized internal processes.
