Smart Meter Automation Improving Customer Engagement

Jersey Electricity Plc, the sole electricity supplier to over 48,000 customers on the Island of Jersey, wanted to get ahead of the curve by rolling out Smart Meters island-wide to improve customer engagement and provide accurate consumption analytics. Faced with ingesting and managing high-frequency interval data from 650 local data concentrators (nearly 1 billion half‑hour readings annually) and the need to validate, store and publish this data rapidly, Jersey Electricity selected WhereScape and its WhereScape Red data warehouse automation platform to build a scalable, maintainable solution.

WhereScape implemented an automated data warehouse and OLAP environment—built, documented and released in just 22 development days—capable of daily refreshes, validation and publishing to a customer portal and internal teams. The WhereScape solution ingested diverse sources, stored ~1 billion half‑hour readings annually, included 68 load/stage tables, 17 ODS tables, 3 OLAP cubes and ~30,000 lines of code, and delivered a single version of the truth that improved customer reporting, enabled time‑of‑day usage insights (helping customers shift to off‑peak tariffs), improved demand forecasting and made network performance issues easier to identify.
