Integrating Mobility Data for South Africa’s First Rapid Rail Network

Gautrain, South Africa’s first rapid rail network, wanted to improve its mobile app and website with richer, more convenient journey planning for passengers across Johannesburg, Pretoria, and Ekurhuleni. To support this, it partnered with WhereIsMyTransport, using mobility data integration to add multimodal trip planning alongside Gautrain’s own train, timetable, map, and feeder bus information.

WhereIsMyTransport integrated Gautrain data with transport data from other local modes, including BRT, private buses, and rail, so users could plan complete journeys across the region. The solution was thoroughly verified, with every route, time, and fare combination checked for accuracy, and the app underwent nearly six months of internal testing by Gautrain and AfriGIS staff, resulting in a more reliable and integrated passenger experience.
